How to get a retail job in NYC?

I'm on Long Island so I really don't know how folks get retail/sales jobs in NYC.First of all..would I get discriminated because I'm on Long Island? Secondly, where can I start to look for jobs? I need a job immediately but I don't want to look for a job at big chain stores because there is lots of competition and lots of people quit/get laid off ,new people get hired constantly, work hours get cut sporadically and lots of work politics happen.I don't want to go through that. My ideal place to work is a boutique shop. Job boards are out of my consideration,Craigslist is a HUGE waste of time since every job ad gets 300 resumes!
My background is architecture.I'm not really knowledgeable on art but overall I can do well at a place where design work is sold. How can I search for these jobs, where should I start?

Retail is always looking for good people as it tends to have a huge turnover any place you go. You're correct that the internet is worthless for submitting resumes. Many HR folks will readily admit it's just a wasteland source for more applications that they don't already need. It can be a good place to start any search but in general for any retail job you are better off going to the store itself and filling out an application. Many companies like Walmart and Kroger have kiosks that you apply at. Once you are done your application not only shows you up as an applicant for that store but all their local stores (in case one store isn't hiring, another may be). Smaller companies that still have paper applications like to see their applicants up front.

If you're into architecture though, why don't you start looking for local job fairs or stop by the local college to speak to folks in that department for their employment assistance departments for help in direction to finding that kind of job. You can bet it will pay a lot more than retail though it will be a lot harder to find. Good luck.
